2020-2021 Fairfield Choral Music Department Audition Results

Dear Students and Parents,

We know that for many people, these lists will either –  to some degree – make dreams come true or devastate them.  We hope you understand that we have created, revisited, agonized over, discussed and thought long and hard about every choir and where each of you are placed.  Every single student is important to us and we want to make sure you end up in the ensemble that will challenge you to reach your potential without overwhelming you.

If you end up being pleased by where you are, please keep these in mind:

  • BE HUMBLE.

    • Just because you’ve reached your goal doesn’t mean that you can become complacent, lazy and sit back. This is not the end of your musical journey, it’s only the beginning.

    • Your placement is a privilege. There are literally hundreds of people who want your place. In a school district our size, we have options. There are students who barely missed a cut off as perhaps you barely made one.

  • BE EXCITED.

    • There’s nothing wrong with being thrilled about the prospect of next year! However, your excitement may bring heartache to others. Be careful how, where, and with whom you express your joy - including how you post online if you choose to do so.

    • Congrats! You are part of a choir program that has a long and rich tradition. You are the inheritor and current torch bearer! Be ready to work hard and keep that tradition alive.

If you end up disappointed by your placement, please keep these in mind:

  • BE STRONG.

    • Congrats! You are part of a choir program that has a long and rich tradition. You are the inheritor and current torch bearer! Be ready to work hard and keep that tradition alive.

    • Your value to society is not determined by which Fairfield Choral group you are a part of. You are a wonderful, beautiful individual who has so much to look forward to. The sun will rise tomorrow. You will wake up. The end of the year and summer will carry on. 99.999999% of the world’s population doesn’t even know or care about these lists. It might hurt for a bit, but adversity is an opportunity to grow.

  • BE HUNGRY.

    • If you think we made a mistake, there’s nothing we love more than being proven wrong by a student who takes their placement and absolutely shines! Dig deep and ask yourself these questions:

      • Do I sing/dance as well as I possibly can? Do I have room to grow?

      • Have I put forth the most effort at all times (Sectionals, Overall GPA, Attendance, etc.)?

      • Am I living up to behavioral expectations (Discipline, Following Directions, Social Media Activity, etc.)?

    • Come in with a strong desire to showcase your talents! There is so much growth ahead of you in nearly every aspect of your life – including choir!

Important: If you would like to discuss your audition and get any feedback, we are happy to do so beginning May 11th, 2020. Any e-mails discussing audition results prior to this date will not be answered until then. In addition, we will not discuss a student compared to another other student. We will only discuss the results of the student inquiring.

FAQ's

How are students selected? Students are selected on many factors. The typical factors like skill set and ability to perform are used, but also things like behavior, work ethic, and commitment also play roles. Another two equally important elements for our team are curiosity and flexibility. Our directors try to figure out if each performer has a learning curve, and if they’re able to confidently tackle new challenges on the spot. There’s something magical about a group in which every single member is striving to better themselves, to imagine an even higher plane of performance. With a group like that, every rehearsal and every performance feels fresh.

If I was in a group last year, I'll definitely be in on this year... right? No. You have to earn you spot in the next year's group just like you did the year before. Also, when moving up from middle school to high school, the competitiveness gets tougher. Skills are expected to be at a higher level as well as work ethic.

I didn't make show choir, but I really still want to be a part of it. Can I help out somehow? Absolutely. You can join our combo if you have the skill set to play well on an instrument or participate on our tech crew and be a part of the action backstage. If interested, contact Mr. Mercer.

Can we get feedback on the audition? Yes, but not until May 11th, 2020. If you would like to discuss your audition and get any feedback, we are happy to do so beginning May 11th, 2020. Any e-mails discussing audition results prior to this date will not be answered until then. In addition, we will not discuss a student compared to another other student. We will only discuss the results of the student inquiring.

Is there an informational meeting or gathering that we will need to be at if we are in the program? We will have an online meeting that you can participate in to learn more about the program as we move forward on May 2, 2020 beginning at 11:00am. All parents are welcome - parents who are new are especially encouraged to be a part to learn about the program and answer questions you might have.
